A 17th Century Enfield Domesday Book by Ian Jones. On the 22nd January 1881 the Observer published a summary account of a directory/survey of the parish of Enfield, put together in the later 1630's which, regrettably though not unsurprisingly, has vanished as far as we know. The range of detail it went into was immense covering everything from the numbers of chickens to the tithes due to the Vicar, the non-payment of which clearly caused much indignation and occupies much of this summary. Nonetheless it presents a fascinating glimpse of Enfield just before the outbreak of the Civil War. Newsletter December 2022, pp 4-5.

Five Brothers and a Palace - continued by Ian Jones. Photo of the 1918 sale prospectus. The sale was preceded by the closure of the Palace School, and followed by the development of the Pearsons Store. Enfield Palace was a royal palace dating from 1347. It was visited by Queen Elizabeth I. Much of the building was demolished in the late 1700s, and the remaining part became a school in the late 1800s. The sale, prior to demolition, raised much local concern over the historic Tudor Room and other features. Much was rescued and transferred to a new, purpose-built extension at Little Park, in Gentlemans Row in Enfield, where it is now a private residence. Newsletter May 2022, pp 5-8.

One of Stuart Delvin's sources describes a vanished world of the later 19th Century: "near what is now The Broadway in Green Lanes, Winchmore Hill... the oaks and elms made the lane green and shady ….. It was a favourite stroll for lovers and old folks in the summer evenings, and they mostly sat upon the logs to rest, and listen to the nightingales who sang rapturously in the snow white hawthorns."
